I’m just READING about it

I checked out Making Babies: The Science of Pregnancy by Michael Bainbridge from the library a few weeks ago. Wow! I just thought it would be neat to learn about how babies come to be. No, not about the obvious way, but about the genetics and the way the embryo forms. Well, Bainbridge didn’t let me down. I found this book very interesting and I enjoyed the slightly humorous tone. I didn’t want to put it down at times. Of course, I can be a nerd.

At our library, this book is in the pregnancy section, mixed in with books like “What To Expect When You’re Expecting.” I feel a little sorry for the people who check this book out thinking it is just a slightly more scientific “What to Expect” book. It is very detailed—explaining human embryonic development and comparing it to the development of other species. It discusses Evolution and the evolution of our culture’s approach to pregnancy. I love stuff like this, but I bet some readers just want cute pictures.
